Citizen of India who attains age of 18 years becomes Indian electors and also becomes eligible to apply for the Voter ID Card in India. There are online, offline ways to apply for the new voter ID card in India but in both the ways, you need to fill Form 6 with the required documents for voter ID online registration or offline registration.

Important Points to know during voter ID online registration

  1. You can check your name, age and address from the ECI voters site online following steps given in Voter List Online in India. Voter ID Search by Name can be done through this way and you can check your name in voter list.
  2. If you need any correction in name and age, you can update voter ID card details online by filling Form 8 and following steps given in Correction in Voter ID Card.
  3. During name and age correction in voter ID card, you need to fill Part and Serial number in the form, follow these steps to know Serial and Part number of electoral roll online.
  4. If you are an overseas Indian voter and want new voter ID card, then you need to fill Form 6A and need to follow steps given in NRI Voter ID Card.
  5. If you want to change address in voter ID card due to change in address within the same assembly, then you need to fill Form 8A and follow steps given in Change address in Voter ID card.
  6. If you want to apply a new voter ID card as a new voter or applying for new voter ID card due to change of constituency/assembly area or relocation from another constituency then you need to fill Form 6 and need to follow steps given below in this article.
  7. If you have any objection in the electoral roll or if you are objecting for inclusion or seeking deletion of name in electoral roll (due to expired, shifted, missing, not qualified, repeated or duplicate record) then you need to fill Form 7 online through the ECI Voters site.

Requirements for the Enrollment as New Elector

  1. The person who is applying for the new voter ID card should be an Indian citizen while voter ID online registration.
  2. You should have attained the age of 18 years on the qualifying date i.e. 1st of January of the year of revision of electoral roll.
  3. You should be an ordinarily resident of the part/polling area of the constituency where you want to be enrolled.
  4. You are not disqualified to be enrolled as an elector by any means.

New Voter ID Offline Enrollment Steps

  1. You can download Form 6, take two copies of this form, alternatively you can also take Form 6 free of cost from offices of Electoral Registration Officers / Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and Booth Level Officers.
  2. Fill the form and take copies of the relevant documents such as age and address proof. You can approach in person before the concerned Electoral Registration Officer / Assistant Electoral Registration Officer of your district, assembly or you can send the form by post addressed to ERO/AERO.
  3. Filled form and required documents can also be handed over to the Booth Level Officer of your polling area.
  4. You can call ECI toll free number 1950 for any help

New Voter ID Online Registration Steps (Form 6)

  1. Visit National Voters’ Services Portal or Voter’s ECI site or you can refer article on verify and authenticate voter id details
  2. Click on Apply online for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC Form 6.
  3. Select language from the drop down among given languages Hindi, English, or Malayalam.
  4. Application for Inclusion of Name in Electoral Roll for First time Voter OR on Shifting from One Constituency to Another Constituency form opens which is addressed to “The Electoral Registration Officer“.
  5. Select State, District and Assembly/Parliamentary Constituency from the drop down list.
  6. You can select the First Radio Button if you are applying for the new Voter ID Card as First time voter and Second Radio Button if you are applying for the new voter ID card due to shifting from another constituency.
  7. Give your particulars in support of your claim for inclusion in the electoral roll such as Name, Surname, Name of your relative, Surname of your relative, Type of Relation, Age [as on 1st January of current calendar year] or Date of Birth (in dd/mm/yyyy format) and Your Gender.
  8. In section (h) of Form 6, give your current address where you are ordinarily residing.
  9. In section (i) of Form 6, given your permanent address.
  10. In section (j) of Form 6, give Family/Neighbour Epic No. (“Electors Photo Identity Card” number given to the electors by Election Commission of India (ECI), often displayed in bold in voter ID card)
  11. Give email id and mobile number for the future correspondence.
  12. Upload your recent photo, age proof document, address proof document in .jpg,.png,.bmp,.jpeg format only.
  13. Give the declaration (i)- that I am a citizen of India and place of my birth is (give your place of birth name, select state and district) (ii)- that I am ordinarily resident at the address given at (h) above since (give the date from when you are living in your given address) (iii)- that I have not applied for the inclusion of my name in the electoral roll for any other constituency.
  14. Give Place name from where you are applying for the new voter ID card and write captcha code (given in the image) in the text box provided.
  15. Before submitting the Form 6 for the new voter ID card, please ensure about the entries made in the form are true. Any false submission is punishable under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950).

Track Application Status or New Voter ID Card Search after voter ID online registration

Once you have submitted the Form 6, you’ll be given a Reference ID. Follow these steps to track application status online.

  1. Open Voter’s ECI site and login.
  2. Click on Application status button
  3. Form for Track Status opens
  4. Enter the Reference ID in the box provided
  5. Click on Track Status button

Voter ID Download after voter ID online registration

Once you have tracked your application and want to see your name, age and other details then you can check the same from the ECI voters site online following steps given in Voter List Online in India. You can take the printout of this information for the reference purpose.

Since there is hologram in each voter id card given to the electors, so you can not download it online.

List of age proof document for new voter ID online registration

  • Birth certificate issued by a Municipal Authorities or district office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths or Baptism certificate ; or
  • Birth certificate from the school (Govt. / Recognized) last attended by the applicant or any other recognized educational institution ; or
  • If a person in class 10 or more pass, he should give a copy of the marksheet of class 10, if it contains date of birth as a proof of date of birth ; or
  • Marksheet of class 8 if it contains date of birth ; or
  • Marksheet of class 5 if it contains date of birth ; or
  • Indian Passport ; or
  • PAN card ; or
  • Driving License ; or
  • Aadhar letter issued by UIDAI

List of residence proof document for new voter ID online registration

  • Bank / Kisan / Post Office current Pass Book ; or
  • Ration Card ; or
  • Passport ; or
  • Driving License ; or
  • Income Tax Assessment Order ; or
  • Latest rent agreement ; or
  • Latest Water / Telephone / Electricity / Gas Connection Bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or that of his / her immediate relation like parents etc. ; or
  • Any post / letter / mail delivered through Indian Postal Department in the applicant’s name at the address of ordinary residence.
